WHAT I SAW IN HOUSTON

AND WHY WE MUST SHUT DOWN THE FEAR AND HATE MONGERS AMONG US

There’s a really good and insightful piece by Matt Taibbi in the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine about – you could have guess this – President Donald Trump. In it Matt basically wrote that Trump’s Charlottesville disaster was the end of his Presidency: his base of supporters is narrowing, Republicans continue to step away from him (gingerly and with nothing much to say) and that even his own Cabinet Members are pulling back, distancing themselves from the guy they owe their positions to.Taibbi makes the additional point that we now know who Trump is and after Charlottesvile also what he stands for.The piece was written before Trump’s “Look at the crowd” visit to a dry, safe area outside Houston which only further cemented the feeling we all have that Trump’s doesn’t speak for us, that he is, indeed, finished.Yes, he may be President for another three and a half years (hopefully Robert Mueller will shorten that time con…

THE UNITED STATES' MOST CORRUPT POLICE AGANCY? THE UNITED STATES BORDER PATROL. BAR NONE.

Image
THIS IS THE AGENCY TRUMP HAS EMPOWERED TO ROUND UP ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND PROTECT OUR BORDERS

More than 140 Customs and Border Protection agents were arrested or convicted of corruption in recent years—and President Trump’s promise to hire 5,500 new agents could make the problem worse.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Tex.—In the calm waters of the Texas Gulf Coast, Robert Hannan steered his boat toward what he thought was a crab trap. He found a corpse.
“There’s nothing that can help this person if it's a real body,” Hannan said in disbelief to the 911 dispatcher. “It's floating just like it would a body, but there’s no head.”
That grisly find would lead investigators first to an assassin from the powerful Gulf Cartel, and then to a U.S. Border Patrol agent who helped the killer move drugs and guns across the border.
Joel Luna is one of more than 140 Customs and Border Protection agents arrested or convicted on corruption charges in the past dozen yea…

Many Shades of the U.S. at War

By: Thomas Freidman August 30, 2017 New York Times
I’m just back from visiting all of our key air bases in Iraq, Afghanistan and along the Persian Gulf, and I find myself wrestling with two stark contrasts: the contrast between what is happening there in the air and what is happening on the ground, and the contrast between the decency of the U.S. military personnel fighting this war and how unworthy Donald Trump — who has become our divider in chief — is to be their commander in chief. The first contrast was summed up in two wall-size digital maps at our Kuwait-based command center for the war on ISIS. One map displays every military aircraft the U.S. has in the skies over Syria and Iraq (as well as Russian, Syrian and Iranian aircraft) pounding ISIS targets. There are little symbols for B-52s, U-2s, F-16s, F-22s, F-15s, MQ-9 Reapers and jet refuelers. It is a giant aerial armada, a flying killer symphony orchestrated by the U.S. Air Force. The other ma…

SO IS OUR SOLE NATIONAL ECONOMIC POLICY - "CUTTING TAXES CREATES JOBS" - A LIE?

It’s a Myth That Corporate Tax Cuts Mean More Jobs
By Sarah Anderson August 30, 2017 New York Times
“The arithmetic for us is simple,” AT&T’s chief executive, Randall Stephenson, said on CNBC in May. If Congress were to cut the 35 percent tax on corporate profits to 20 percent, he declared, “I know exactly what AT&T would do — we’d invest more” in the United States. Every $1 billion in tax savings would create 7,000 well-paying jobs, Mr. Stephenson went on to say. The correlation between lower corporate taxes and more jobs, he assured viewers, runs “very, very tight.” As Congress prepares to take up tax legislation this fall, including an effort to reduce the corporate tax rate, this bold jobs claim merits examination. Notably, it comes from the chief executive of a company that’s already paying comparatively little in federal taxes. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, AT&T enjoyed an effective tax rate of just 8 percent between 2008 and 2015, despi…
