SALLY YATES AND JAMES CLAPPER TESTIFY AT JUDICIARY SUBCOMMITTE HEARING

NO SMOKING GUN BUT APPARENTLY TRUMP PAID NO ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS ABOUT FLYNN'S POTENTIAL BLACKMAIL BY RUSSIA

I have to say that former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, even with her grits and biscuits southern accent, truly cleaned a couple of clocks yesterday, especially – I am delighted to report to you – the evil clock of one Ted Cruz.  It always amazes me just how much this partisan and dumbass Republican senator from Texas manages to shock me with his smug, arrogant and condescending bullshit.  Anyway.

Okay, so here’s the deal.  It is always difficult, if not dangerous to the mind, attempting to apply logic (reason, sense) to the decisions and policies of Trump and his Administrative cabal.  But someone needs to tell me why it is – what was the logic behind - when Obama warned Trump to “keep away from Flynn” he then went on to appoint him National Security Advisor?   Wouldn’t anyone in Trump’s position not investigate Obama’s warning at least by investigating Flynn’s background and activities at least a tad more?  Somehow it makes no sense.

On the one hand, maybe it does.  Obama fired Flynn from his Defense Intelligence Agency back in 2014 for “policy differences” a term that sheds about as much light on the reasons behind the firing as a match would throw light into a black hole in space.   But no question, Flynn, after joining the Trump campaign, became one of the most vociferous of Obama critics and of Hillary Clinton too.  Remember him leading the “Lock Her Up” chant at the Republican National Convention?  Maybe Trump concluded in perfect reverse logic that “Hey, if Obama hates this guy so much then he’s the man for me!”

Or on another hand, perhaps it’s a matter of Trump already knowing about Flynn’s Russian connections and, therefore, he might have concluded “Well, what’s wrong with that?  He’s only trying to help just like that Russians did for me when they re-financed my loans and threw the election to me?”

Actually it was Senator and former comedian, Al Franken (D-MN), who raised this issue directly in his questioning at the Senate Judiciary Sub-Committee.   He was the only one who did.  Cruz, naturally, invoked the “What about the leaking of classified information?” alluding to Hillary Clinton’s e-mail “scandal” rather than actually questioning Flynn’s actions or the Russian connections.  But, what more – or less – can one expect from the Senator from Florida?    Avoidance and skirting of the main issue was pretty much the entire contribution of the Republicans on the subcommittee.

The Judiciary Sub-Committee hearing was conducted in a fairly calm and decorous manner rather than, let’s say, Trey Gowdy’s (R-SC) Hillary Clinton witchhunt or Jason Chaffetz’s (R- UT) reality show hearing about Planned Parenthood.  This is the good news.  Not much in the way of new information – save that Trump and his White House Counsel were both warned separately that Flynn was compromised and could be subjected to blackmail – came out of the hearing.  But nearly all the Dems pumped for an independent investigation but frankly I have no idea how this might be accomplished given that Republicans hold power in both the House and the Senate as well, of course, over at the Justice Department.  I guess this is why we need to keep resisting and protesting.  Maybe such efforts will peel off a few sitting Republicans and I’m pretty sure there are going to be more explosive revelations as time goes on.  In fact, I’m betting that lawsuits over The Trump Family’s mixing of private business and public business is one avenue that could prove very fruitful.  There are lots of laws and rules Ivanka, and Ivanna and Jared could be running afoul of.

One take-away from the Yates/Clapper questioning is that Sally Yates is evidently one smart, articulate and tough woman.  Her demeanor and her responses to questioning, including to the same questions over and over again, were concise and precise.   She did not and would not reveal any information and it’s too bad that she is no longer with the Justice Department.

Here's another take-away:

In a Twitter message posted hours before Monday’s hearing, Mr. Trump suggested that Ms. Yates had tipped off journalists about Mr. Flynn’s conversations with the Russian ambassador.

The president presented the accusation against Ms. Yates without evidence, but such details have rarely stopped him. Since taking office, Mr. Trump has made it clear that he believes the leaks of classified information are far more significant than the actual connections between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.
Ms. Yates said Monday that she had never leaked classified information, and was not the source of any reports about Mr. Flynn.
She also pointed out that there were three other people in the room for the conversation, including Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel.

So as we continue to suffer from the Trump “Revenge On All Things Liberal” campaign proceeds apace, we must wait for more drips of leaked information from anonymous sources in order to know just what the fuck is going on.

PS: Consider, for a moment, that the Flynn allegations – that he was compromised by Russia, that he could be blackmailed, that he did discuss Russian sanctions with the Russian ambassador, was the opening salvo into the whole Russia connections business.  And guess with?  Trump, Breitbart and Fox News claims that the mainstream, Fake News, lying, liberal press actually got this one right!

By they way, this is the Trump voter's view of the hearings into the Russian connections:

AND SO IT GOES!
