THE POWER OF RESISTANCE MEETS THE POWER OF THE INTERNET
FINALLY SOCIAL MEDIA IS WORKING FOR US RATHER THAN FOR THE RIGHT WINGERS
Bill O’Reilly, Fox News’ most watched program, has left the right wing stage with a golden parachute nugget worth around $25 million dollars. His demise has been called “swift” by the news media but it was only “swift” after advertisers began pulling their advertising dollars from “The O’Reilly Factor” that occupied the coveted 8:00 PM broadcast slot. Bill, always smug, always pompous, always reliably sneering and smearing, had apparently been conducting himself like a President Trump when it comes to the treatment of women at Fox and who knows where else, for years. It was reported that his $25 million exit bonus aside, he and Fox ponied up an additional $15 million over the past 15 years to settle harassment complaints against him. So what was different this time around?
The power of resistance combined with the power of the internet is what finally did the Bill Factor in. Over the course of the past two weeks, the number of his sponsors has plummeted from about 50 to about 10 and these 10 (MyPillow and Life Credit Company, for example) had nowhere near the cachet of Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Lexus and GlaxoSmithKline. For the first time the internet, social media and activism is beginning to work for us and not in the cause of the Rush Limbaugh’s and Alex Jones’s of the world. Call it an unintended consequence of the Trump effect but what he’s done is energized the left into action and this action is getting results.
Bashing advertisers who sponsor objectionable media programming content is nothing new either from the right or the left. Historically, it’s been the Evangelicals and conservatives who have taken center stage in boycotting companies whom they deem beyond the pale by supporting LGBT issues and support conservative corporate CEO’s like David and Barbara Green, the owners of Hobby Lobby who prevailed on the Supreme Court’s decision that they were within their rights to withhold health insurance coverage based on their “closely held religious beliefs.” These are the kinds of cases in the past that garnered mainstream media attention.

In addition to the widespread resistance that Trump’s election has engendered, it’s the targeting of the pocketbooks of advertisers that associate themselves with unoffensive personalities, online sites and programming that has changed. As we all know, money talks in America and it speaks no more loudly in our society then in our politics (Citizens’ United) and in our advertising (“Mad Men”). More and more what we are seeing is activism of social media savvy groups who mobilize people to express their concerns and to expose where advertisers are placing their ads, or in other words, where they are spending money. This is a very new and potentially powerful movement that is, for now, in its infancy to reverse three decades of nonsensical public policies that have benefited the rich and crushed the rest of us.

You might have seen some articles about Russia lately that haven’t involved the Trump Team’s collusion in rigging our Presidential Election. I’m referring to the “special prisons” Putin’s Russia has established specifically for homosexuals, which, according to Putin, simply do not exist in Russian society. Reports out of Russia claim that officials have set up secret “camps” in Chechnya where hundreds of gay men have been tortured and murdered.
It comes after Novoya Gazeta reported Chechen police had rounded up more than 100 men suspected of being gay – killing three of them, last week. Chechen’s President Ramzan Kadyrov, who is a key ally of Vladimir Putin, accused of ordering the clampdown, denied the allegations claiming “it’s impossible to persecute those who are not in the republic”.
The Chechen government suggested there are no gay people in their country.
But there’s more. Just recently in Trump friendly Russia, the Supreme Court has ruled that Jehovah’s Witnesses are a terrorist group and must hand over all of its property and assets to the government. So much for religious freedom in democratic Russia. Now I find the folks who knock on my door handing out pamphlets a tad annoying, but a terrorist group? Nah. Don’t think so. But in dear old, Trump friendly Russia they have been classified as the same danger to Russian society as is ISIS.
Have A Great Day!
