HOUSE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN NUNES (R-TX) APPARENTLY MISSED THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LESSON ABOUT THE THREE BRANCHES OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT
HOUSE SELECT INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE CHAIR RUNS TO WHITE HOUSE WITH CLASSIFIED INFO THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SECRET
In a previous post, I explained why (at my age) it could be dangerous for me to scan the headlines of the New York Times and Washington Post first thing in the morning. You know, those of us of a certain age have to be careful about shocks to our aged systems. They can be fatal. The Trump Administration - after just over 60 days - has provided no end of "events" that endanger my health and well being. But today, it wasn't early in the morning but late this afternoon that I had another out-of-body experience over a Breaking News Headline. This time on CNN. While I don't recall the exact headline, it went something like this:
REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE SELECT HOUSE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE TROTS DOWN TO THE WHITE HOUSE TO INFORM TRUMP THAT TRUMP TOWER WAS SUBJECTED TO A SURVEILLANCE OPERATION.
Jesus Fucking Christ! I'm not sure if it's because Nunes (R-CA) doesn't fully grasp the idea that when the Executive Branch is under investigation, as the Trump Administration is according the the FBI's James Comey, it's not exactly appropriate to run down Capitol Hill and jog west on Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House to notify the President of information provided to him by the FBI and/or the NSA that has a bearing on his own Committee's highly secretive investigation about Trump and his associates. Or is it that Nunes is simply a stooge for the Trump White House? Now, you might have some difficulty deciding which alternative is the correct one since both smack of rank dumbness and/or rank partisanship that is a disgusting display of putting Party over the welfare of America. On the other hand, we all remember the IRS, Benghazi and Clinton E-Mail "investigations" conducted by Republicans that were as blatantly partisan as the Koch Brothers or George Soros and amounted to precisely nothing. In all three.
Trump, naturally, will leap on the info provided to him by Nunes about his being named by someone the FBI and/or NSA was surveilling as a "collateral" or incidental mention during some phone call or some e-mail or tweet. This, of course, in Trumpland, vindicates his claim that Obama wire-tapped him in Trump Tower. But what Trump and the Trump White House will not mention or maybe they are too stupid to realize, is that the very confirmation that there was/is indeed surveillance of Trump Tower (the Trump residence? The Trump Campaign Headquarters?) which actually means that the FBI and/or the NSA had or have sufficient grounds of either espionage or criminal activity to conduct the surveillance in the first place. This, folks, is what Nunes confirmation that Trump was named in some surveillance operation really means. Of course, it does not mean that Trump himself might be the object of the FBI or NSA's investigations. More likely it is the Trump Team associates, particularly those who have worked for and maybe pledged fealty to Putin and Russia. We seem to have an ever expanding cast of Trump aids, associates, friends, acquaintances and advisors who do indeed have very direct Russian connections, Sean Spicer's alternate set of facts world to the contrary.
But what the fuck was Nunes thinking? He doesn't realize that he has ripped the Intelligence Committee's integrity, objectivity and credibility to shreds? Sorry, but apparently he really is just a Trump stooge. Or patsy. Or mole. Or snitch. There is no point in continuing this charade of Congressional investigation because there is no question now that under Republican "direction" this committee's investigation will go down the same dead end cul-de-sacs as their previous spectacles over the IRS, Benghazi and Clinton e-mail inquiries. If some sort of independent special prosecutor or some other means of guaranteeing the objectivity and independence of investigations into whether or not our Presidential Election was compromised by Russian interference and who might have assisted the Russians in their efforts, if anyone, then we, as a nation, have not a hope.
The Sean Spicer explanation of connections, influence and potential treasonous activities, is - for the moment - simply a matter of Trump allies, associates and advisors innocently meeting with or working for Russians and Russian connected oligarchs and appearing on Russian television outlets. Sure. All these meetings, all those attending meetings and conferences in Moscow, all the years of consulting work on behalf of Russia and Russian friends of Vladimir Putin, could be very innocent. As Chief White House Propaganda Font, Sean Spicer says, there is no law against people working for Russia, being hired by Russian oligarchs or attending conferences in Moscow. Or Kiev. He is right, of course. It is, however, an offense when you don't register as a foreign agent if, in fact, you are working for, lobbying for and being paid by a foreign government or working to lobby on behalf of a foreign government. This is the same whether or not you are lobbying for France, Great Britain or Russia. What Sean and the Trump Team don't seem to get, is that, indeed, all of these meetings, lobbying and working to boost Russia and Putin's status here in the United State may not be indicative of any malfeasance or criminal activity. But coupled with the facts that we now have confirmed that, indeed, Russia did work to influence the 2016 Presidential Election, this puts all the Trump associates work on behalf of Russia and the Trump Administration's deflections in an entirely different light.
Although it might be that Republicans aren't all that much concerned about such interference since their guy won, we are. We simply cannot accept a foreign government interfering in our domestic affairs. Certainly not in a Presidential election.
The sorry state of affairs here in America right now, is both scary and tragic. Trump's silence about the rigging of our Presidential Election - save that 3 million illegal immigrants voted for Hillary rather than for him - is beginning to look like not just a reflection of his BroMance with Vlad Putin, but is beginning to look a great deal more sinister. Will Trump himself be implicated in assisting Russian elements in rigging his election? Well, as it looks now, the answer is a "maybe." I'm not taking any bets. But as was the case with Watergate, sometimes denials, "rational" explanations and pushback against investigations ultimately don't work. Watergate investigator Bob Woodward has been saying for weeks now that there is a cover-up going on that the Trump Administration is engaged in.
