Note:  This was the front page headline in today’s New York Times.  It was adjacent to “U.S. Jury Acquits All Defendants In Refuge Siege,” perhaps an even more shocking bit of news than the Trump supporters' headline.   The Bundy folks have gotten off scot free for occupying Federal property, the Malheur Wildlife Refuge while armed, trashing the place and indirectly causing the death of one of their followers.  Imagine folks, if these illegal acts had been conducted by African Americans.  Or by the Native Americans who, to prove the point, have just been arrested in North Dakota for protesting a gas pipeline through ancient burial grounds.  Would you want to bet your life savings that these folks would be acquitted by any jury anywhere?

Let’s begin with a few quotes from Patriotic Americans in today’s Times article:

Jared Halbrook, 25, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, said that if Mr. Trump lost to Hillary Clinton, which he worried would happen through a stolen election, it could lead to a revolutionary war.  “People are going to march on the capitols,” he said.  “If push comes to shove and Mrs. Clinton has to go by any means necessary, it will be done.”

Roger Pillath, 79, from Coleman, Wisconsin, “It’s not what I’m going to do, but I’m scared that the country is going to go into a riot.  The country has never been so divided.  I’m looking at revolution right now.”

Bill Sterling, 44, of Jacksonville, Florida:  “You go through any neighborhood and see how many Trump signs there are and how many Hillary Clinton signs there are, and I guarantee it’s not even going to be close.  The only way they’ve done it is by rigging the election.”

Richard Sabonjohn, 48, of Naples, Florida “I’m a more peaceful person.  But I do think there will be a large amount of people that are terribly upset and may take matters into their own hands.”

Jesus Christ.  What the fuck are these people thinking?  Has some virus spread through folks attending Trump rallies that deranges their minds?  Look, no one – me included – thinks that there is going to be a second Revolutionary War if Trump loses.  But even this talk of armed rebellion is a new chapter in presidential elections, and like the entire Trump phenomenon, is definitely not a welcome addition to our collective history.

More from the article:  “New York Times reporters spoke to people attending Trump rallies in Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  In every crowd, there were supporters who echoed Mr. Trump’s message that the polls did not reflect the “silent majority” who they said would turn out on November 8 and elect him in a landslide.

An information diet from Trump-friendly news media like Breitbart News and Infowars has led many to believe that there is no way Mr. Trump can lose, and that even contemplating the possibility is foolish.  Mr. Trump has repeatedly called the election “rigged,” raised concerns about voter fraud and said that he might not accept the results if he lost, making Democrats and Republicans alike worry whether about the transfer of power will be smooth.”

Pretty damned stupid, right?  And shocking isn’t it that folks say that armed revolution might be necessary if Trump loses.   But, unfortunately, this is where we are as we approach election day.  All this talk of violence and revolution isn’t new.  If you check out the alt.right web world like Storm Front and those other radical conservative Nazi organizations, this talk has been the norm for decades. The Donald in his foolish (and unsubstantiated) claims of rigged elections, rigged media, rigged polls, rigged government, is simply parroting what you can read or hear daily on Infowars, Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh and all the other batshit crazy alt.right folks.  Fox News, to its credit I suppose, has not advocated revolution if Trump doesn’t win.  On the other hand, Fox News has been part of the problem and part of the reason why Trump and his supporters can openly call for armed struggle rather than accepting the results of our Presidential election.  By not challenging the Birther Movement, the “theme” that Obama is the most Criminal President ever, that Hillary, the Clinton Foundation, Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and anything and everything connected to the name Clinton is evil, corrupt and criminal, is acquiescence.  Silence equals acceptance.

When you let this crap stand without challenge, don’t knock the lack of truth, facts and data about issues such as climate change or rigged elections, don’t debunk conspiracy theories, don’t call politicians to task for outright lies they spew over these same media outlets, you are basically acknowledging the legitimacy of such themes.

As I’ve said before, one of the benefits of the Trump campaign (perhaps the only one) is that the covering obscurity of this alt.right fantasy world or conspiracy theories and hate memes has been ripped off and exposed them to all America.  So far, it looks as if this exposure is not going down all that well.  But we’ll see.  And let’s also see how the media treats the “We Must Take Up Arms If Trump Loses” folks.  Will they call them out or will they remain silent.  It makes a difference.

P.S.:  Apropos Bill Sterling's "sign" quote noted above: Just ended a Skype session with a friend of mine who lives in Naples Florida.  She says that Democrats and Hillary supporters are reluctant to put signs in their years for fear of getting their yards and homes trashed by Trump supporters.

Thank God this wrenching election ends in 11 days!
