LADY GAGA AT THE OSCARS

Image
If you didn't see this last night at the Oscars, please watch.  It was the absolute highlight of the evening.

The song is from the documentary "The Hunting Ground," about sexual assault on college campuses,  which was nominated for Best Documentary at this year's Oscars.  It didn't win but the story is a powerful one as was Lady Gaga's performance last night.

The film will be available on Netflix on March 14, 2016.

Here's a Bill Maher segment where The Hunting Ground is discussed:

DECONSTRUCTING “MOST AMERICANS THINK THE COUNTRY IS HEADED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!”

Image
IT’S TRUE: BUT THE LEFT AND RIGHT HAVE DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSING REASONS WHY
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times. In fact, probably closer to ten thousand times depending on how much TV you watch and how often you tune into right wing radio. And it doesn’t matter if you’re watching MSNBC or Fox News, the homily “Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction” is beamed into our brains like the millions of radio, television and microwave waves that pass through our thick-skulled heads daily. And, it’s true. The vast majority of Americans do think the country is headed in the wrong direction.Poll after poll proves it.

Last Friday night while watching Bill Maher on his politically incorrect, HBO's “Real Time With Bill Maher” the issue of “the majority of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction” arose, again. Bill and his panelists, like most of us, accepted this statistically accurate conclusion without comment. But what is rarely …

FRANKLY I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS CREATIONIST SHIT!

South Carolina 'Creationist' Science Quiz Is Real
Yes, we've moved on from the critical issue of public education and Creationism in this political campaign season. Why?: Trump.  But even though our attention has been riveted to our televisions to catch the right wing candidate slugfests, aka Republican Debates - forget those polite, boring Democratic ones - and glued to the movement of Donald Trumps lips so that we catch every syllable of his next lame-ass utterance, life in America does go on.  And our children are still being taught all over the country five days a week.  Here's a story about what our children are being taught at one private school in South Carolina.
Daily Kos By Hunter
This particular Christian Academy is a tiny school, it's private, it's got Christian right there in the name so you know where they're coming from, and like a good portion of America's much-heralded private schools it apparently exists to give children the shittiest poss…

WHERE IS OUR DICTATOR, CRIMINAL PRESIDENT WHEN YOU NEED HIM?

FLINT’S PUBLIC OFFICIALS NEED TO BE ARRESTED.  AND MAYBE SHOT. HERE'S WHY:
I’m sure that every American is aware of the lead-poisoning scandal in Flint Michigan- at least if you haven’t been in a coma for the past few weeks – and I suspect that as a scintillating example of American of American ingenuity and Exceptionalism the right wing gushes endless about, a fairly large swath of the Earth’s7+ billion folks are aware of it too, given Al Jazeera, ISPN, The Guardian and The Times of India have 24-7 Breaking News Headlines. So there’s that.
But this morning, as I curled up in my fake, yet comfy, leather club chair to leisurely peruse the Sunday Washington Post, I came across this headline:
CONTAMINATION, DISEASE AND OUTRAGE
DID FLINT’S CONTAMINATED WATER CAUSE DEADLY LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE?

Damn, I thought. So poisoning young kids in Flint via water laced lead isn’t the only “problem” Governor Rick Snyder and his ever vigilant conservative Republican administration missed as they gover…

DEATH BY GUN: BUT IT'S NOT WHAT YOU MAY BE THINKING

Image
GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE; PEOPLE KILL THEMSELVES WITH GUNS

CONCLUSION The use of illicit drugs and a history of physical fights in the home are important risk factors for homicide in the home. Rather than confer protection, guns kept in the home are associated with an increase in the risk of homicide by a family member or intimate acquaintance.

RESULTS During the study period, 1860 homicides occurred in the three counties, 444 of them (23.9 percent) in the home of the victim. After excluding 24 cases for various reasons, we interviewed proxy respondents for 93 percent of the victims. Controls were identified for 99 percent of these, yielding 388 matched pairs. As compared with the controls, the victims more often lived alone or rented their residence. Also, case households more commonly contained an illicit-drug user, a person with prior arrests, or someone who had been hit or hurt in a fight in the home. After controlling for these characteristics, we found that keeping a gun in the ho…
