BACK TO KOCHI

HUMMING BIRDS AND FUSION BAY

Yellow bougainvillea, red bird of paradise, white oleander, iridescent green hummingbirds, a blue topped Kingfisher, a rooster pulling up the morning sun, mangoes ripening outside our bedroom window, crows cawing cravenously from sunrise to sunset, a black and white cat lying languid on the terrace and an Ever-Bark-Dachshund next door (no matter where we stay there’s a barking Dachshund next door – is it Karma or are there just way too many dachshunds in Kerala?) - I feel at home again. It’s a if I walked out of my door at 706 C Street straight into the backyard of the Jade Homestay in Kochi with no time or space in between. And back in my USA home, I hear they had three inches of snow in Washington. Here? It’s 8:00 AM and the temperature is 75 degrees.
Some of you may recall the my telling you about the cooking lessons I took three years ago from Chef Benny, who, at the time, was guiding the Oceanis (“Keralan, Portuguese and Syrian Cuisines”) Restaurant to gr…

FREE SPEECH AMERICAN STYLE

DOMESTIC CENSORSHIP:  ALIVE AND WELL?

While the world’s attention is focused on Paris’ Charlie Hebdo massacres, the subsequent terrorist roundup across Europe’s and all things free speech, I’ve pointed out on Politico and the Huffington Post that we too here in the U.S. do practice censorship.I’ve used to example of not having seen cartoons that depict Blacks with big red lips chomping down on watermelon or cartoons that depict hooked nosed and horned Jews.Sure you can find these affronts to civility and decency on obscure web sites and blogs but you won’t find them on mainstream media.
But there was a recent event here in DC that illustrates an aspect of censorship that we practice but don’t often hear about, since local news rarely becomes Breaking News. There are exceptions, of course, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Eric Garner being three such examples of local events that did become national stories. But so far I haven’t seen any “Breaking News” about the dismissal of Ari Roth from…

ONE ISSUE THAT WE AREN'T FINISHED WITH YET

THE COPS VERSUS THE REST OF US DEBATE

When I first moved to DC in 1965, I could not have predicted that my interaction with the city’s police force would be played out along Pennsylvania Avenue, in front of the White House, along Constitution Avenue or on the Mall in the shadow of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial.  I arrived in DC at the dawn of the “age of demonstrations” and I was a full fledged, card carrying member of that era and frequently received less than gentle treatment from the cops charged with keeping order and peace and protecting property.   No permanent, bodily damage, however, but a couple of temporary bruises.
But on a daily basis, my non-confrontational interactions with members of the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Force were quite different.  Before coming to DC I had no interactions with our men (and woman today) in blue.  Being a stranger to DC, I had several interactions with them, mainly asking directions or enquiring about what some parking sig…

MY THIRTY MINUTES WITH RUSH

AMERICA'S FONT OF WISDOM SPEAKS

Had a doctor’s appointment today, traffic was fierce due to a demonstration downtown, so I had about 30 extra minutes in my car to listen to my weekly dose of Rush blather.  Here’s the latest news from the font of American wisdom:
1.There is a “secret cell” operating in the White House.Rush’s implication was that this is a secret Muslim cabal the members of which he did not name but is headed by Obama.
2.Liberals are “cowering in fear” because Obama did not attend last week’s Free Speech demonstrations in Paris. (I didn’t quite get the connection but it was something like liberals have realized that Obama is incompetent and, therefore, are very afraid.)
3.Obama’s foreign policy is driven by the fact that he is afraid of ISIS, Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.
4.Obama did not go to Paris because he “cannot even say the words Muslim or Islamic Terrorists.”(Yes, I know.I don’t really get this one either.  It's "Rush Logic.")
5.Accordi…

IS THERE STRIFE, VIOLENCE, BLOODSHED & DEATH IN OUR FUTURE?

THE CORPORATE STATE of AMERICA

George Orwell in his seminal “1984” got it wrong. Not totally wrong but he didn’t envision that corporations would rule the universe rather than governments. Idle speculation or fantasy concoction that our corporations have more influence over our lives than our government?Just today the new Red (Republican Majority) Congress introduced a bill to weaken Dodd-Frank for the second time in less than a week.Their first week, by the way, since being sworn in.So now tell me that America isn’t ruled by corporations? This public policy initiative after the biggest worldwide collapse in 80 years just six years ago?Are they nuts? Not nuts, maybe, but definitely doing corporate bidding. They, the corporates, get their way with tax cuts, slaps on their wrists for criminal behavior, fines instead of jail time. Not so for the rest of us.

Andrew Keen’s “The Internet Is Not The Answer” (my last post) explicitly lays out the damaging effects thus far of the computer/internet …
