HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It’s 2015.Not sure what to expect from the New Year. One thing that will be new is Republican control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.Well, good luck to all of us for this menacing development in our lives!
I gave up on the partying, bar, nightclub, and vast gatherings scenes a long time ago.Typically, we see a play or go to a movie. This year we were at a friend’s house for dinner.Saw a local DC news report that asked Washington’s residents what they were going to be doing New Year’s Eve and how they were getting home. The “Designated Driver” category beat out taxis, Metro Rail, Uber and Metro Bus.Surprisingly, 78% of the folks polled said they were staying at home.I’m down with that.  It's definitely safer.  But it might be that folks are staying home since the temps here are below bloody freezing again.  Although I just saw that next Wednesday the high temperature is supposed to be 60 degrees. That’s winter in DC for you.

Why Conservative Longing For a Past “Golden Age” Will Surely Disappoint.  It’s Called “Reality.”

Growing up in Rochester, New York, I had what I call a good childhood.  We, my father, mother, brother and me lived in Greece, NY, a western suburb of the city. And my dad, like several of my neighbor’s dad’s, worked for the Eastman Kodak Company, the city’s largest employer.Over the broad reach of my own nostalgia, the mid 1950’s until the mid 1960’s when I left for college, my memories of that time are pretty dammed good. This is also this period, the 1950’s, which are often cited by conservatives as a far better time when there was no racism, everybody had good job, and every American was a compassionate, generous and loving Christian. The 1950’s period in our history, is that time which Phyllis Schafley of The Eagle Forum fame would, in the 1980’s, refer to as she exhorted women to stay home, take care of the house, raise the kids and attend to Father’s needs. So I’m going to cite the decad…

Marine Corps Clashes With Whistleblower Over Murder of 3 Marines in Afghanistan

A Marine Corps Reserve major who’s an Afghan war veteran is now fighting his superiors with a lawsuit (pdf) in an effort to remain in the service after a board of inquiry recommended he be kicked out after reporting facts about an insider attack at a forward operating base.
Major Jason Brezler alerted his superior officers to the presence of an Afghan police chief, Sarwar Jan, with ties to the Taliban at Forward Operating Base Delhi. Jan kept an entourage of young male sex slaves, one of whom in August 2012 opened fire on Marines at the base, killing three and wounding one. Brezler and another Marine, Captain Andrew Terrell, had previously expelled Jan from an Afghan village for keeping the sex slaves, according to Stars and Stripes.
That attack and others were not investigated by the Marine Corps until much later, under pressure from the dead Marines’ families and the media. When an investigation was finally…

KRUGMAN: THE ONLY ECONOMIST WHO GOT IT RIGHT FROM THE GIT GO!

I thought I’d post this Krugman column that he wrote just after last month’s midterm elections rout – for the Democrats that is.Note his last line where he speculates about Republican Governance come next month. But we really don’t have to wait that long do we if Republican responses to Cuba and the assassination of the two NYC cops are any indication of things to come?

Triumph of the Wrong
NYT November 6, 2014
The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet midterms to men of understanding. Or as I put it on the eve of another Republican Party sweep, politics determines who has the power, not who has the truth. Still, it’s not often that a party that is so wrong about so much does as well as Republicans did on Tuesday.
I’ll talk in a bit about some of the reasons that may have happened. But it’s important, first, to point out that the midterm results are no reason to think bet…
