MEXICAN MEANDERINGS

Searching For Paradise
In our search for the perfect Mexican paradise (after San Miguel de Allende, of course) featuring beaches, sun, warmth and glorious views, I think we just might have found it in Loreta, a small town on the Sea of Cortez. With mountains cascading down to the sea, long stretches of sandy beaches, gorgeous sunsets and this morning’s multi-colored sunrise, Loreto appears to be a magnificent stage set for something out of the 1957 film version of “South Pacific.” But while Loreto might be paradise but it wasn’t easy reaching it.
Day before yesterday, I trudged down the length of the Malecon (boardwalk) in La Paz, stopping at car rental agencies, tour agents and the local bus station to check on prices and timings to get from La Paz to Loreto.I’d been told by our hotel concierge (actually a delightful woman who looked like Gloria Estefan and was charmingly embarrassed when I told her so) that it was a four or five hour trip.Thing is, Loreto is up the coast due north of L…

Why Don't Mexicans Use Their Car Horns?

Revelations Mexicano
NOTE: We have been traveling about Mexico for the past four weeks which might explaing the lack of posts here of late.
This morning while we were having a cappuccino in a cafĂ© at the edge of Independence Square we were startled by the sounds of horns blaring just 20 feet away on the massive four lane circle that surrounds the square. It was irritating.Annoying.Yes it was around 8:30 Monday morning and traffic was heavy and in DC or any other American city for that matter, such an assault on the senses would be expected. But here in Mexico City it was a complete surprise.Mexicanos don’t use their car horns very much.In fact I don’t recall a single time when I heard one prior to this morning.I’m sure there was one – or perhaps many – before but the fact that we were irritated by the noise attests to the lack of such intrusions we’ve found throughout Mexico.I mean, the city has 8 million people but you just don’t hear that many blaring horns here.

Which observation on…

VOTER FRAUD IN AMERICA

FINALLY: VOTER ID PUSHBACK
A great LA Times piece on a Federal judge's recent opinion on Wisconsin's Voter ID law that Governor Scott Walker so vigorously defended last week.
A conservative judge's devastating take on why voter ID laws are evil
Michael Hiltzik LOS ANGELES TIMES michael.hiltzik @latimes.com
In a rational world, the debate over voter ID laws would be ended by the eloquent, incisive and angry opinion issued late last week by U.S. Circuit Judge Richard A. Posner of Chicago in a case concerning Wisconsin.
But this isn't a rational world. So not only will the debate continue, but Posner's opinion failed even to sway his fellow judges on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. The court split 5-5 on Posner's request for an en banc -- that is, full court -- rehearing of the Wisconsin case, in which a three-judge panel already had cleared the state's ID law to go into effect for next month's election. That meant Posner's request was turned down and his …

THE SECOND AMENDMENT: THE PESKY PHRASE THE NRA CONVENIENTLY IGNORES

The Second Amendment as written in the Constitution: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
This is an issue I’ve pointed out time and time again to the right winger posters on Yahoo, Politico and elsewhere.Apparently the gun rights nuts believe that “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state,” is a transcription error – that it isn’t actually a part of the Second Amendment.Or maybe they think that Obama slipped this phrase into the Constitution, lawless President that he is.In any event, the article I’ve posted here is long but a worthwhile read.It is far and away the most cogent and rational piece about this particular issue I’ve seen anywhere.
From the Daily Beast.
