WHY HOBBY LOBBY DECISION IS SO WRONG

Reagan-Appointed Judge Cites Hobby Lobby Ruling to Decide Polygamist Sect Doesn’t Have to Testify about Child Labor Violations
From AllGov September 2014
When the U.S. Supreme Court elevated the importance of religious freedom in the Hobby Lobbycase, it made it possible for a member of a fringe religious sect to avoid helping the federal government investigate child labor allegations. Citing the precedence established in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, which allows businesses to cite religious objections in not providing birth control to workers through company health insurance plans, U.S. District Judge David Sam in Utah has ruled that a member of a polygamist group can cite religious freedom as a reason to not give testimony in a criminal probe. Warren Jeffs, the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), an offshoot of the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been in trouble with law enforcement for years. He’s now serving a life…

GOVERNMENT REGULATION STIFLES INNOVATION?

HOW ONE INNOVATIVE BIO COMPANY WITH A NEW CANCER THERAPY GOT SLAMMED BY WALL STREET

Northwest Biotherapeutics Stock Woes Highlight the Harm of Short Sales.
By Steven Pearlstein, Columnist September 27, 2014
The past couple of weeks should have been heady ones for Bethesda-based Northwest Biotherapeutics.
The small biotech firm, with an innovative new vaccine treatment for brain, prostate and other cancers, had just received an initial green light from British regulators to offer its drug to doctors and patients even before its definitive Phase III trial is completed in the United States. The approval was the first under a new program designed to speed the process of getting promising treatments to market, and it follows a similar decision by Germany in March. Both European regulators cited independent analyses of results from earlier brain cancer trials showing that Northwest Bio’s immune therapy doubled the average of 17 months of extra life now provided by the standard treatment of chem…

CONSERVATIVES STILL DON'T "GET IT" THAT WE GET IT

THE RIGHT WING DENIAL THAT JON STEWART PUTS TO REST

You've heard all the reasons why Barak Obama is the worst President in the history of America: he is the most criminal of all our former Presidents, that his policies are destroying America, that he is a racist; that he is incompetent, naive, un-equipped, lazy, spends all his time golfing, hates America - well I could recite all the negative characteristics that the Right Wing/Conservatives/Tea Party ascribe to our President but it would take me a couple of days.

So I think that Jon Stewart's piece on the disrespectful "latte salute" that Fox and the right wing media just exploded over a couple of days ago, fairly puts the real reason conservatives hate Obama, right out front.

Here's the clip:

Yup!  And even though every single time I post a comment that concludes "Maybe you don't like Obama simply because he's Black" I get a veritable explosion of replies calling me a racist, playing the race ca…

FERGUSON UPDATE

FERGUSON POLICE CHIEF ISSUES APOLOGY TO MICHAEL BROWN'S FAMILY AND PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATORS

The apology was created in conjunction with a public relations firm.  Which is fine.  But what has troubled me from the beginning of this incident, is the actions and non-actions of the Ferguson Police Department in informing and reaching out to the Ferguson community.
From the Chief's first press conference where he introduced the video of Michael Brown in the convenience store - and precious little else about the case -  to the latest "there is no Police use of force report" as required by the Department in all cases involving the use of force, I've grown increasingly skeptical of the Department.  For example, there has been the "broken eye-socket" rumor that's been floating around since Brown was killed.  Whether or not Office Wilson had a broken eye-socket is not something that is difficult to prove.  After all he was seen by staff at a hospital following …

INEQUALITY UPDATE: OR HOW I LEARED TO LOVE RICH CEO'S.

The Pay Gap Between CEOs And Workers Is Much Worse Than You Realize
I find this article truly disturbing.  It is inconceivable to me that Americans are so uninformed about this issue.  Sure, between 1980 and 2011, when the OWS folks took to the streets, we weren’t talking about obscene CEO pay, or wealth inequality or the shafting of America’s Middle Class.  But thanks to OWS, now we are.  Or at least I thought so.  Is it Fox viewers and Rush listeners who aren’t aware of this thirty year trend? If so, I mean, OK, I would understand.  But how can it be that 100% of the adult population isn’t aware of the tremendous increase in CEO compensation compared to the rest of us over that past thirty years?
From the Washington Post, 25 September 2014

"People Vastly Underestimate CEO Pay Gap, Survey Reveals.
Americans might think they know how bad inequality is, but it turns out they actually have no idea.
A new study conducted at Harvard Business School found that Americans believe CEOs make …

REPUBLICAN MEMORY LOSS

OR WHY IT IS THAT CONSERVTIVES HAVE A PENCHANT FOR REWRITING AMERICAN HISTORY?

(Maybe because it’s not all that pretty for them to remember?)
I reprint what was a response to a particularly vicious comment about Hillary Clinton a couple of months ago as she was on her book tour.I found it in my “electronic file cabinet” and thought it worthwhile reprinting it in its entirety since our 2014 mid-term elections will be fast upon on us.  I, for one,  think it would be a good idea to recall the facts of our country's recent past.
L. Streeter
Once again the American illiterate are demonstrating the failure of the country’s education system. These, childish, ignorant and unfounded comments condemning Secretary Clinton only serve to confirm that thee is no mature, intelligent and valid argument against one of the greatest, most accomplished and intelligent women to ever grace the national and international stage.
It never fails though; mention a Clinton and the memory-challenged Republicans fla…

ROBERT E. POLI DIES AT 78

WHY THIS MAN MATTERS IN AMERICA’S MODERN HISTORY
Ronald Reagan, actor, TV personality, SAG union leader, governor and America’s 40th President was elected in 1980 beating Jimmy Carter. In one of his first major actions, during the summer of 1981 he fired 11,345 striking PATCO (Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization). At the time, Robert Poli was President of the PATCO Union and the strike was over working conditions at the nation’s Air Traffic Control Centers. The strike began on August 3, 1981 when 12,000 of the country’s 17,000 controllers walked off their jobs. The strike was illegal according to Federal Law. (By the way, the PATCO Union had endorsed Reagan for President.)
Reagan’s famous “Government isn’t the solution, Government is the problem” line, one leg of the Regan/Conservative tripartite policy foundation, was put into place in his ending of the PATCO strike and firing its workers. While I suppose the fact that Reagan removed the solar panels C…
