When You Get Caught Between God and New York City
The Best That You Can Do Is Fall In Love.*

Are you as tired as I am of this bullshit that passes for public discourse?  You know, the daily hurling of charges, countercharges, epithets and slanders back and forth across the airways polluting the atmosphere and our minds while nothing gets done?   Well, I exaggerate.  There are those Red States passing more gun carry laws and outlawing homelessness.  Sheeesh!  Then there’s Congressional gridlock, aka  Republican intransigence because they can’t fathom that a Black man sleeps in the White House – when he’s not out campaigning rather than bombing the Ukraine. Yes, of course.  While our highways crumble, while the US has the slowest internet of any Western country, while poverty keeps increasing as the rich get richer – the examples of this insanity are immeasurable - nothing changes.  Does no one even care anymore?  What the hell is going on here?    What the fuck has gotten into people?  Has the entire country fallen off the edge of our good old-fashioned traditional flat earth for God’s sake?

But, alas, it’s nothing new.  Though it seems that since Obama’s election what used to be an annoying background chatter – like the sounds of your younger brothers fighting downstairs in the basement playroom that you pay no attention to until there’s a loud crash – has morphed into a screeching battle of epic – no, make that Biblical – proportions with super enhanced Dolby-8 Surround Sound sound effects so bloody shrieking loud it’s like being chained to a theater seat while being forced to watch a continuous loop of all Freddie and Jason’s Friday the 13th movies until your head explodes.  At least it seems like this to me.

Listened to Michael Savage the other day blathering on and on and on about the immigration crisis, calling the boys and girls gang bangers, drug addicts, criminals, thugs and virtually every other demeaning characteristic in the book. (The “book” being “The Right Winger’s Guide To Disgusting and Demeaning Descriptions of Anyone and Everyone You Disagree With.”)  And, of course, it’s all Obama’s fault, biggest criminal President in history that he is.  While I still listen to Rush and Sean on occasion, I’ve reached the point that my brain just can’t hold any more of this bullshit.  My mind is in danger of becoming nothing more than a overflowing septic tank full of shit. (I’m guessing this is where the “Shit For Brains” metaphor comes from.) I don’t want to even listen to these cretins any more.  I’m tired. I’m sick of it.  I’m betting that we are all suffering from Right Wing Insanity Syndrome, RWIS, Tea Partiers and Ted Cruz excepted, of course.
It’s been over thirty years now.  Thirty years of the culture wars and conservative economic and social policies.  Where has it gotten us?  Thirty years ago the US ranked in the top ten of western nations in math, reading and science scores.  We’re now in the mid-thirties.  Thirty years ago about one-third of the workforce was unionized and working and middle class families could support themselves on one salary, could buy a house, and could send their kids to college without mortgaging their futures.  Today?  Less than 12% of America’s workforce is unionized and working and middle class incomes have been declining while the rich have gotten richer.  Over 90% of the gains in national wealth since the collapse of 2008 have been scooped up by the already rich.  The top 10% of our citizens own 75% of the country’s wealth.  Poverty continues to grow as does gun violence.  Our roads and bridges are crumbling.  God help us if some snowmageddon takes out a sliver of the electrical grid.  Our public school system continues in decline.  The U.S. has more people in prison on a per capita basis (707 per 100K) than any other developed nation.  Just what is this?  What the hell are we doing?

One would think that after the string of mass killings we’ve been through of late - 32 slaughtered at UVA, 27 massacred in Sandy Hook Elementary School, 12 in Aurora Colorado -  something would have been done.  But you’d be wrong.  Nothing’s been done except the expulsion of a lot of hot air while more states pass gun carry laws.  In fact, not only has nothing been done, we here in DC are being subjected to the second assault on our local guns laws, the first by a South Carolinian who sued the city and via the Supreme Court ultimately forced City Council to change our gun control laws.  This time it’s from Tom Massie, a Republican House Member from Kentucky.  This is what he’s proposing as an amendment to a House Appropriations bill:

None of the funds made available by this Act, including amounts made available under titles IV or VIII, may be used by any authority of the government of the District of Columbia to enforce any provision of the Firearms Registration Amendment Act of 2008 (D.C. Law 17-372), the Inoperable Pistol Amendment Act of 2008 (D.C. Law 17-388) the Firearms Amendment Act of 2012 (D.C. Law 19-170), or the Administrative Disposition for Weapons Offenses Amendment Act of 2012 (D.C. Law 19-295).

This from a guy who represents Kentucky, for God’s sake.  He has nothing to do with us DC residents.  I’m betting he lives out in the burbs anyways.  This is sheer madness.

Yep!  We sure are living in one hell of a fucked up society.  We are so far gone down this selfish, mean and cruel conservative hellhole that I’m beginning to wonder if we will ever recover.  My younger friends keep telling me that this is a phase, the pendulum will swing back, it’s a cycle.  Maybe.  But thirty years is a long time to be stuck in a sick-ass cycle or brain stultifying phase.  Can you say “forever”?  Has some evil Satan grabbed the pendulum so that it’s stuck permanently on Conservative?

Thirty years.  It’s enough already.  More to come.

*Alternatively:  When you get caught up in right wing fantasies, the best that you can do is to shoot someone.
